Editorial methodology

Every site on the list passes four checks:

1. Owned by a known entity. Major media company, publicly-funded library, or recognized non-profit. No anonymous shell sites.
2. Licenses its content. We verify the site has real distribution deals, not pirated rips.
3. Free at the point of viewing. Either ad-supported with no paywall or library-funded with a free card.
4. Available in the US in 2026. Some great free streamers are EU-only (BFI Player free tier, ARTE.tv); we list those separately when relevant.

How we test

For each site we open the URL fresh in a clean browser, no extensions, no ad-blocker. We measure:

• Time from page-load to playback (target: under 30 seconds).
• Number of pre-roll ads and total ad time per movie (median).
• Whether signup is required to browse, to play, or to keep watching.
• Whether the site nags about installing an app.
• Catalog spot-checks: does the site actually have what it claims?
• Mobile experience on iOS Safari and Android Chrome.

How often we update

Monthly. Free streaming is volatile — services rebrand (Vudu became Fandango at Home), get bought (Freevee folded into Prime Video), or disappear. We re-test the full list every month and update the page date.

How we make money

We don't, yet. This site has no display ads, no affiliate links, and no sponsored placements. Every outbound link to a streaming site is marked rel="nofollow" — we get no SEO benefit from linking to them, and they pay us nothing.

If we monetize later, it'll be obvious: a clearly-labeled disclosure at the top of the page, and the editorial picks won't change. Sites get on this list by passing the four checks above, full stop.
